THE STRANGER

I cleaned my hands with the kitchen towel, stamping my feet on the tiled floor whilst humming a song sweating profusely. I felt uncomfortable and scared. It’s like being watched by unseen forces. I live alone, and also not expecting any visitor. I left the steaming food on the gas cooker, and rushed to the door just in case I could catch the one parading my territory. Getting to the living room, I saw the door knob turned from the back. More sweat dripped from my forehead as stories of witches and wizards refreshed in my memory. Opening the door, I prayed it should be Mama Chika or Aunty Nurse, my neighbors. Expectantly, I was disappointed. Goosebumps gushed in my skin as shivers ran down my spine. At that moment, I lost my voice. I remember praying for death last night, but I don’t want to die a miserable one. “Who are you?” I asked the figure standing right in front of me. He was clothed in darkness, with bloodshot eyes, scaring teeth, and extremely long nails. He forced himself in, locked the door, and said; “I’m Mr. Death. You called me, and here am I.” “Nooooooooooooo!!!!! I don’t want to die.” My scream didn’t have any impact on him. I regret saying those words in rage just because Segun broke up with me. He gave me a long stare, one with anger, then, fire came out of his eyes, I slumped, fighting with death over my words, but he prevailed.
